Custom Made Training

The Custom Made Theatre Company launched in December 2007. We are pleased to announce two new classes for the Winter Term, 2010!

Directing for the Small Theatre

This seven week course will take the early career director through all aspects of directing for the smaller stage, including scripts selection, working with stage managers and designers, casting, getting the most out of your actors, and much, much more.

This class will be split between lecture and discussion, and then working with actors on a scene study project to develop hands-on directing skills.

This class is for someone who is looking to get into directing for the many black box companies in the Bay Area or wants to hone their skills in a safe, supportive environment. It is also a prerequsite to be considered to direct for Custom Made's upcoming readings and workshops.

Directing for the Small Theatre is taught by Custom Made Artistic Director, Brian Katz. He is co-founder of the Custom Made Theatre Company, and his shows have been nominated for a number of Bay Area Theatre Critic Circle awards, as well as top ten lists from the San Francisco Bay Guardian and Talkin' Broadway. Beyond Custom Made, he has worked for The Goodman Theatre, Berkeley Rep, Cal Shakes, Killing My Lobster, Three Wise Monkeys, La Vache Engree, and other cool places and companies. For Custom Made he has directed Down the Road, Slavs!, Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights (twice), Orchards (co-directed), Lies and Legends: The Musical Stories of Harry Chapin, Vinegar Tom, Black Snow, Animal Farm, Bobby Gould in Hell, Saint Joan of the Stockyards, Bye-bye, bin Laden, Temptation, Finding the Sun, The Heidi Chronicles, Candalous Comissioner, The Water Engine, Assassins, The Love Song of J. Robert Oppenheimer, Red Light Winter, and The Last Days of Judas Iscariot. Other directorial highlights include Speed-the-Plow, Love's Fire, Women and Wallace, The Bear, The Temple of Dionysus , Commit Me to Memory, and When Josh Googled Susan.... Brian has a B.A. in theatre literature and criticism from Clark University and interned in dramaturgy at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. He also teaches full-time at Heald College in San Francisco.
